I inherited this oil painting from my parents many years ago and it has hung in the same spot in my home for years (away from direct sunlight and drafts) I have always and still love this painting. Just curious if anyone may know how to discover the artist. My eyesight is not what it use to be ... LOL

Gorgeous piece of art, how big is it? Have you considered having it cleaned? I bet the colors which look muddy will become brilliant and even more impressive. Thanks for posting it. The back seems to show it was framed in Vienna, Austria.

My Mom and Dad purchased this painting at a Flea Market in Buenos Aires in 1972 The seller told my parents it was painted sometime in late 1800's to early 1900's. Since 1972 I have always loved this painting. I will measure the painting along with the frame and thank you for the suggestion about getting it cleaned. Will keep you posted anything I learn about the artist. Maybe with a good cleaning the signture will be easier to read.

      Hi Everyone
I am still trying to find someone who can help me figure out the name of the artist. I have sent shots of this to a very famous art gallery in Argentina to see if they can help. One cousin said it could be a painting of Martin Fierro. Martín Fierro, also known as El Gaucho Martín Fierro, is a 2,316-line epic poem by the Argentine writer José Hernández. The poem was originally published in two parts, El Gaucho Martín Fierro (1872) and La Vuelta de Martín Fierro (1879). The poem supplied a historical link to the gauchos' contribution to the national development of Argentina, for the gaucho had played a major role in Argentina's independence from Spain.[1] Will keep everyone up to date as soon as I can solve this mystery

Indeed, this is a painting to return & return to ~~ it draws us in.
Congratulations on this line of inquiry about the potential inspiration for the work. Fascinating.

The painting itself is 13 1/2 x 11 without the frame it is painted on wood not canvas. In regards to cleaning it, I looked into that with a 5 star gallery in Scottsdale AZ about 5 years ago. I took the painting with me to ask about helping me find out who the artist is. The owner said due to the signature being so hard to read he suggested cleaning it. When I asked how much, I almost dropped the painting! He wanted $800.00 (not in my budget). I asked if he could just clean the area where the signature was (guess I must have offended him) because his response left me with my mouth on the floor. He said he would not guarantee that cleaning that area ONLY would not damage the signature. So this is the main reason I am on this quest - I have also sent pics to my sister and brother in law in Italy to see what they might be able to learn. This is what I do know - Painting is of an Argentine Gaucho, possibly Martin Fierro -
No idea who the artist is - cannot make out the signature
      Was framed in Austria
      And I LOVE THIS PAINTING.
So the quest continues.... will keep you all informed as I learn more.
Stay safe and healthy everyone - :-)

This is a lovely painting. I am not sure if it helps but the board that shows in the back of the painting was sold under the trademark "Pelikan". Guenther Wagner has been an art/writing material supplier since 1838. Based on the fond of the label, I would guess that the painting dates to the beginning of the1900's. I saw some other paintings that were painted on the same board dating to around the 1920's or 30's.

The board was sold not only in Hanover or Wien.
