This past year I have done a lot of selective shopping and picked this up at an Antique Shop also. I love the frame also. This is marked in the dark area of the painting but hard to make out so I will take it to our area art museum to check artist. I am trying to get a little more selective by hard to do as I love to collect. Thank you for looking and hope you enjoy.

Appears to be a photograph. Probably a tintype that has been paint enhanced.

These are typical of the late 19th century.

Thank you for the love and I am sorry scottvez that I did not include that this is a painting on board in the discription. I do see by my not so great photos it looks like a paint enhanced tintype.

OK-- not a tintype, but still possibly an albumen print that has been painted.

I'd double check the board and see if there is a thin paper applied over it-- it will be most visible at the edges.

A photo of the item out of the frame (front and back) would be nice to see-- may shed some additional clues.

I have taken it out of the frame and it is an actual painting on board, no paper under paint. I will in the next few months be getting this and a few other pieces of artwork to an art museum for evaluation. My son works with a person on the museum board so I am able to get them seen. I collect and it is more for his knowledge than value.
