My wife and I (mostly my wife), used to do a lot of winter cooking in the fireplace, and we did a lot of it.
Guests would love to come over for a fireplace meal and friendly visit with only the light from the fireplace and the candle light. We'd spend the evening over a hearth beef stew, Dutch oven baked bread, and a baked apple desert. Topping it off with a cup of spiced hot cider.
The rising cost of heating oil has put a damper on this greatly missed pastime. As others have experienced, we too had to tighten up our belts on heating oil and decided to put a wood stove on the hearth to help with the cost of heating our house.
Don't get me wrong, the wood stove saves us greatly on our fuel oil and is a very efficient and warm source of heat during a chilling February night, but I can't help passing by our fireplace and seeing the now dormant utensils that were used for our fireplace cooking.
I wanted to post them to show you what I can only walk by as I pass the fireplace these days.
No, I'm not going to break into tears bb2, I just liked using them. They are all vintage 19th century or earlier, from the small tasting spoons to the long fleshing forks and they are what helped the kitchens of our past.
    Happy February ……. Brr!
