This is a very strange old saw i found in a leather case. It has the initials 'N.W.P.' carved into it and it has this odd little nib and notch on the end of the saw. you can see it in the third photo on top. The blade looks pretty odd too. it's obvious that this saw was cared for alot as it's in great shape.
Disston made saw. Lower grade version of their D7 saw.
That little nib as you call it is a starter tooth. You flip the saw and run that tooth on your cut line once to make a notch so you can follow the cut line without wobble or the blade swaying. The teeth appear to be cross cut finish saw.
Nice find, love that leather sheath, too!!!
thank you flashlarue, fhrjr2, and Iptools!
flashlarue: why is it a lower grade version of the D7? i can't find any difference between this and their other pre-1928 D7s.
Disston during the depression years produced the saws without their name as cheaper saws, while the metal was the same the wooden handles were of a less grade. It was a ploy to sell saws a a lower price but not devalue the Disston name.
/me adds my thanks to fhrjr2 & flashlarue for sharing your oh-so-interesting tidbits of info about ho2cultcha's Disston saw. SO MUCH FUN, the little offbeat-ish things one can otherwise learn by hanging around CW... ;-) :-) :-) :-)
Oh, and ho2cultcha -- I *love* that leather sheath too -- whoever "N.W.P." was surely must have been happy/proud to have owned it, likely also the sort of craftsman who probably routinely used it to create some or other variety of 'wooden thing' large or small...??!! <applause>
thank you Obscure!
