This got blown around the other day in some ferocious winds we had at the nursery. There was a piece of old hemp rope around the center, but it must have come off in the winds. I cleaned and repaired it and will tie another piece of rope on it. I think there was a cork in it too. It's definitely very old. any idea where it could be from? I was thinking Japan.

Normally Asian and African gourds were etched or carved. Ones similar to this were common among Incas, Mayans and Mexicans. The plain ones were used to store dried seeds for planting the next season or for dry storage of spices.

thanks fhrjr2. I've seen quite a few plain Japanese ones too.
