Hello all, I am new here and new to collecting beautiful Arts and Crafts Jewellery. Can anyone help me with attribution for this Lovely silver Amethyst Brooch I have just placed on layaway ? With my very limited knowledge, ( and pocket I might add) I am thinking Bernard Instone ?? However I am really not informed enough, on any of the wonderful arts and crafts artists from that time, to seriously give an opinion. Any help or hints would be much appreciated. Sue.
p.s It is a large long brooch at 8.20cms.
Hi Hollyhocks,
This brooch is definitely not Bernard Instone sorry to be the bearer of bad new. I have seen these type of leaves before, could I suggest you put a photo of the back has you can tell a lot from the construction. Also does it have any marking. It’s a pretty brooch..
Hello Peasejean55, thanks so much for your comment. It is not bad news that you do not think it is Instone, that’s not a problem at all . I would just love to hear if you have any suggestions as to the designer . The piece is just marked SILVER on the back . I will post an image of the back as soon as I can get one. The person I am buying this from mentioned a number of names that might be the designer but she is not sure .She did however feel sure that it is a British piece .As I said I am very new to this field so would appreciate any help .
Hello Peasejean55, I have listed an image of the back in a new listing. To be honest I don't really know what I am doing, I wanted to add an image here but had no idea how to do so, Tech is not my strong point but at 65 yrs I hope I can be forgiven for that. Any ideas that you might have on this piece would be so gratefully accepted. I looked through your listings on the Show and Tell last night and my mouth was watering …… exquisite pieces.
Thanks so much for taking the time to look. Sue.
Beautiful brooch! I'd have had Instone to mind too, but Peasejean is the Instone Guru on CW :-)
Welcome to CW! Very pleased to see another antique jewellery collector here :-D
Thanks so much Kyratango for taking a look and your nice Welcome ! I felt very nervous even suggesting an attribution for this brooch being very new to the field of Arts and Crafts. Its comforting to know that you would have had Instone in mind too. I feel quite the Rookie here but your comment gave me a boost of confidence. Peasejean is more than likely right as I can see she has a hoard of the most beautiful Instone pieces and would have a wealth of knowledge. She has been kind enough to say she will take a look around and see if she can find any other information that might shed light on the maker/designer of the brooch.
You're very welcome, Hollyhocks :-)
I'm rather new too in collecting A&C pieces...
I rely on Jewels1900 to help identify the makers! She is a wealth of knowledge in this domain!!!
