    Hollyhocks
    (18 items)

Arts and Crafts Silver Amethyst large brooch. Here is an image of the back as kindly suggested I post by jeanpease55 . Any hints as to the maker would be so helpful. I would love to know who designed this because I love the research side of collecting but I am a novice and just buy pieces I like. I have purchased about 6 items in the last 4 months and want to try and learn who, and when, but I am unsure if I should post more pieces because I do not want to take advantage of this forum or its members. Any advise please. Also advice on which category to list in as I got a bit confused. Thanks . Sue.

Hi Hollyhocks, the back is certainly well made a bit like Instone’s work, for me it’s the swirls and them leaves which makes me believe it’s not Instone. I’ve been looking online trying to find a similar piece. Definitely a well made brooch, I’ll keep my eyes and hears open see if I can find some thing similar. Does the brooch have 925 which is sterling used in UK or 835 or 800 in that case it would continental Europe. I have come across jewellery which was designed made by Bernard Instone which I would never have believed was his work. He also designed for Sybil Dunlop from 1945 and Shipton & co. Good luck with your research.

I like that this glass or amethist stone was not just glued onto the piece as the claws appear to hold it into place and the best companies did not use glue. There are a lot of pieces which use fake claws also as part of the decoration, and those will become apparent to you also with a bit of knowledge on your jewellery pieces.

Peasejean 55. Hi Jean, the back is only marked with the written word SILVER like that . Thanks so much for taking your time to help with attribution. To be honest the only reason I initially questioned if it could be Instone was because I had looked online at the backs of his pieces and saw a similarity. I will do more research today, after a while looking I get quite boggled eyed because there is so much to take in and you get distracted by the beauty of the pieces and forget to focus on the details ! This is what happened when I looked through your posts ….. such a beautiful collection, mouth watering pieces. I got completely lost trying to study them. Thanks again. Sue.

Hello Sue, I’m still looking to see if I come across them leaves, they are very distinctive. I know I’ve seen them before, typical I haven’t come across them, but I bet when I’m looking For something else hey presto that is when I’ll spot them.

Ok so I am NOT saying this is by Dorrie Nossiter. I just spent an hour drooling over the pinterest page for Dorrie, and there is a similarity in the wire work coils especially on those long pins ( Kilt or shawl ) with fancy work at one end. The wire and little balls are very similar ?? Just throwing this out there because I am an eager beaver :)
