We purchased this three piece carved mahogany or rosewood parlor set a while back because we liked the Japanese inspired dolphins (or possibly Asiatic dragons). The set includes a settee, a lady's chair, and a gentleman's chair. All three pieces feature the dolphin motif with elongated tongues and hairy paw feet equipped with India Rubber casters (marked I.R. Comb Co., Goodyear, 1851). These casters were frequently used by well-known East Coast furniture makers, Herter Brothers among others (source below). Our eventual goal is to have the set restored and reupholstered in a more appropriate fabric.
As far as we can tell, none of the pieces are marked and would appreciate any thoughts regarding who might have made them.
Gorgeous Victorian pieces, the dolphin carvings are terrific
