Here's another ornate flat top from the 1890's I picked up today. This one is covered in canvas which I prefer for sure over the metal, as I like the wood look on this type. The paint is thin and looks to have been done eons ago, and is actually very good condition dings and dent wise. Lots of cast iron hardware with extra details to the top ends, but lacks the slats center medallions. Has an S imprinted on the front bottom slat clamps. I have only one trunk, The burgundy Round Top Saratoga Trunk, that features the other slat clamps which has the initials S B T C stamped on them, these one's on this trunk are blank as far as initials go. Measures in at 32" L x 19" D x 23" Tall. No maker label, linen interior & missing original tray & the top is gutted to a point. It has the hole and marks from the top tray catch which held the tray in the lid when opened and the pivot pin indents in the back bottom top of the foundation. This trunk has an Eagle lock and also a first time to encounter, these # 2 style/size Latches with the double star and bow-tie pattern. Hope you find it interesting!!

Hey Tom, Cool find . Kind of neat to find that bow-tie between those two stars on the latch, as well as that extra nail on the top portion of the catch. It's a little different, I have seen that particular feature before, but not often. Here's a picture of Carples patent that I did find the other day that gives us a hint to these types of slat clamp.

Nice trunk! These canvas covered, flat trunks with cast iron hardware are the best ones to refinish. (As far as square trunks go). The "nail" in the latch is a rivet as it attaches to the valance. Usually it was a boss cast into the back of the top piece and was difficult to use more than once (if it needed repair) and maybe the non boss one was easier to make, or eaiser to install one with a hole and a rivet. In any case this would most likely not be something that was patentable. The bow is just a decoration. To patent an item it has to function differently or be an improvement on an existing patent, ie; a different way of doing it. Drill, I admire the way you find these parents, great job. However, just posting the image means nothing and can be very misleading. You must post the description of the patent as well to give context of what the patented item does. Not to sound like an ass but every extra hole in a hinge, or a little different looking latch or slat clamp does not always mean something. In a hundred years will people be scrutinizing the different wheels on our cars thinking it means something? Sometimes a wheel is just a wheel.

Thanks Jim for the input we all will never stop learning , that's for sure. I wasn't really sure what nail you guys were talking about, but now I get it. Never notice it ...just the stars stuck out..lol.. go figure. I have your trunk with the fold down front with drawers, saved to this trunks folder for future reference as to a possible outcome after restoration. Thanks again Jim!!

Here are the full patents, which all are welcome to look up anytime by the name ,number and date of the the pictures posted.I encourage all to go to the patent site map for that particular year and search by patent number. Happy reading . Incidentally: some patents are considered Design patents or improvement in design and are filed under that category, as opposed to function. Sorry to mislead in any way only trying to share. I hope everyone always keeps a sense of humor in mind and if it ever gets to deep around here this useful patent may apply.

Hey there Jim, I think you miss understood my comment. I DON"T have a trunk with the fold down front like yours. What I should have said was.. lol, I saved the images of your trunk with the fold down front with drawers, to this/my.... trunks' folder, for future reference as to a possible look or outcome of this trunk after restoration. Thanks again Jim!!

Thanks Drill for the extra effort with the details for the patents. After the hinge clarification using them, as Jim and Brian pointed out, they help a great deal and can eliminate, as in my case I created a false understanding for a time line by using just the image and a date. I have learned something for sure on that note. I am sure when I say, your efforts are enjoyed and read with enthusiasm by all trunkers on this site as a great and interesting attribute of collecting trunks and the learning about their components particulars. Thanks again Drill!!
