Even though barbed wire fenced the west, wood fences were used extensively and have an appeal even now. Benson Doud, of Peru, Indiana received patent number US396,735 on January 29, 1889 for his improved wood and wire fence. Looks as if it wood (pun intended) have been a lot of work to assemble. Sturdy though and should last a long time. The dimensions of this salesman demonstrator are 19" x 7" x 3". Another great addition to my collection.
There was a funny Peanuts Cartoon last Sunday!!! Snoopy's bird friend landed on his doghouse and was whining about his sore feet!!! and Snoopy says I thought you birds knew how to land between the BRABS!!!

Is this supposed to hing or just a section of fence ?
Yes it is just a section of fence. This salesman sample was carried around by a salesman to demonstrate a completed fence. Two posts with rails attached was enough to get the idea across. In my first sales class the instructor gave each of us a mop head and told us to make a sales pitch. The object of the lesson was to groom the mop head, make it irresistible, and describe its amazing features. My take from the class was if you are selling something present it in its best light.
Thanks Thomas. Glad you enjoy my collection. I lived in Mobile four years during the 80s. I remember the fences. What I remember most is the azaleas.
