MAGNUS chord organs were a popular toy thing back in their day, and came in dozens of 'case styles' though the guts nearly always remained mostly identical. They are a miniature version of what would be technically called a "reed organ", their inner mechanics consisting of the very same sorta things that make the actual music from old fashioned 'pump organs', accordions, and even harmonicas. Unfortunately most of their guts were also made from injection molded plastic parts, which both weren't terribly durable when new (and how do most kids play with their toys, after all...??) and don't get any moreso with a now additional 50+yr age on 'em.
Yes (surprise surprise?) I've got one of my own banging around someplace, probably in pieces in a box because it has its own one or two now busted plastic parts inside it...mine is in an entirely different bakelite case.
Oops...since we can't edit comments, pls ignore the word "chord" in my very 1st sentence above. This is *not* a chord organ, as each of its few keys plays one and only one note at a time. I believe MAGNUS (or other companies) did in fact manufacture "chord organs" as well, those being larger instruments with the capability (somewhat like accordions can do) to actually play more than one 'note' at a time (that's where that word "chord" really should be) on at least some of their keys. Sorry everybody for the potential mis-information.
