This arrived yesterday, quite fortuitously & very fast...I will say that the mail remains in excellent form.
It caught my eye as I've never seen an example of frit layered over spatter before...so, being as that I enjoy unusual glass, I jumped at the chance.
Made from cobalt blue glass, it measures around 18 cm tall, 11.5 cm across the four - way crimped top rim, & 7.5 cm across the base, which has a rough, snapped pontil mark. The interesting decor consists of a "bottom - up" spatter in yellow, overlaid with applied frit in shades of orange, red, blue, white, & yellow. It is a very tactile piece, the frit being quite sharp. Also has an intriguing sense of "movement" with the spatter twisting up the stem of the vase & the frit "exploding" all over it. Reminds me of Abstract Expressionism & "Action Painting", though it dates from well before those art movements.
This quirky example of Czech glass is unmarked (as most is that is found in Australia) but I believe that it would date from the 1920s - 1930s era. I have two other vases of the same form in more conventional "bottom - up" spatters. This one was sold as Kralik, but not 100% sure.
