Charles Lotton Cypriot Lava vase. The ovate body dividing at the mouth into four roughly scalloped edges, one or two sides with deep "tears" on the pale orange pink body with blue iridescent lava flow. Signed by Charles Lotton and dated 2004. Approximately 7 1/4” tall by 6” diameter. 3.5 lbs.

These are my observations on the "construction " of the vase. Just my thoughts - I really don't know for sure. I think the body of this piece is clear crystal glass. The inside has been heavily fumed with a lightly iridized orange-pink color. The outside has had ruby red "spots" applied over the crystal exterior of the vase (creating a three dimensional effect of paprika/red spots over an orange background). Encrusted gold flecks were then applied, followed by the iridized blue "lava" with purple highlights. There is a light overall iridization.
I might have missed an opal layer too? Also I think but am not sure that all the above was done before the vase was finally formed?

Beautiful Charles Lotton "Opal sunset Cypriot Lava". I have watched him make several "Lavas" over the years. The red "spots" are frit or pieces of glass that Charles has rolled the hot glass into. The Lava is "Iridized Blue". Very nice!

Thanks much Deb. You think the orange -pink is actually the "sunset" color that took 8 years to perfect?

Deb Do you think the "sequence" might have been: Opal glass gather cased in a crystal layer, this then rolled in red frit, then in gold, vase formed, interior fumed and then "lava" added.

Lotton "Sunset" is an amber colored crystal glass. This is one of his signature colors that he has been using for most of his career. It can be mixed with a layer of opal and decorated with flowers or frits, etc. I think we are looking at a creation that consists of a gather of Sunset crystal, then opal, then sunset frit, then an application of blue lava threading and then the entire piece given an iridescent spray.

The top is so scalloped, along with the magma, this piece seems to come to you straight from the volcanoes of Hawaii. The atisan really makes this piece stand out as if it is still alive with fire. Another magnificent piece for your museum. I know how people must view your home - as if they are in a very private museum which makes the pieces and art more important, and you live in a beautiful home which most people only can dream of. Thank you for sharing this treasure !~
