I love the decoration on these HAK pieces. The decoration technique is called "cow-horn" decoration. The horn painting was a difficult technique: a hollowed cow horn, with a goose quill, was filled up with slip, a new horn for each color. The decorator then painted onto the vase with the horn by laying on the slip through the goose quill using it as a pen.

This company produced fine wares in the Skønvirke style, the Danish form of Jugendstil. The design & execution by is by one of the Malerdamerne of this firm Næstved, Denmark ca.1920. I think they are by Tulle Emborg who had developed her very own style, both in terms of horn painting and wet decorations. With great creativity, she used both spoons and shaking movements to merge the colours. Her close cooperation with Nils Kähler had a strong resemblance to the old Kähler works, the classic art of pottery, and their work became a huge sales success.

Tulle Emborg was a relative of mine, I believe she was my fathers aunt, I grew up about 35-40 miles from Naestved, where Tulle lived and worked, until I was 12 years old we didn't have contact with her. Then I started to go to a special dentist (I needed braces) in Naestved, and we connected with Tulle. Whenever I had an appointment in Naestved, my mother and I would visit Tulle, she was a kind lady, always served tea and cookies, (and sometime a glass of sherry) she had some of her ceramics in her little apartment, and she gave me a beautiful silver ring with and amber stone, and I believer I might have one of her ceramic bowls. I'm happy to see that she is remembered, both Tulle and my parents have been gone for many years, I reside in the US now, but am very pleased to read about my distant relatives that I remember from my childhood in Denmark.
