I have no provenance that ties this to being a soldier carved piece, but because of the subject matter it goes nicely in my trench art collection.
The piece is carved from a single piece of wood and is 10" long and about 3 1/2" tall at the gunner.
The soldier with helmet sits behind what I would say is a Vickers WW1 era machine gun.
The style of carving of the soldier has a 1930s look to it (my opinion).
While the carving may have been made as a desk object, it appears to have been used for some time as an ash tray. The ashes have left a residue in the tray bottom and also to the bottom of the machine gun.

Thanks for the Love Bogie. I'll have to get it down and check on the wood.
Take a look at my other postings-- I have a lot of trench art items up.
