This little wooden cat is about 6" long x 2.5" high. I bought it along with a nice tea set from someone who is selling some things from a friend's grandparents who lived in Japan in the 1960s and 1970s. This was in a box of stuff marked "Japan", so they thought it must be Japanese. Indeed, I later found another one of these also identified as from Japan. It even had the same coating and green pads on the bottom. Not sure if this was a popular item in Japan in the 1960s-1970s, or what. I love cats, though, and this is a nice piece...... No CW "wood carving" category?
Huh...looks a little like a fennec fox too?! I really like it, he's in such a lovely restful pose
Fabulous sleeping cat, a very talented wood carver made this
@LaurenRedmond - Thanks for your comment! It does, doesn't it! The Fennec Fox is native to north Africa, so probably only seen is zoos in Japan... Do they have zoos in Japan?!
@Newfld - Thanks Jenni! He/she took really conscious advantage of the wood grain...
Thanks for taking time to look at and loving my little sleeper Jenni, Watchsearcher, LaurenRedmond, aura and yougottahavestuff!

Thanks for loving my little cat iggy, PhilDMorris, fortapache, RichmondLori, Kevin and Hoot60!
Just some Japanese background, they liked to make decorative pieces in medium sizes, often animal, like rabbits and cats, average 5 to 6 inches, called okimono, and the Japanese home decor is sparse, but these were really popular.
I bought a bronze rabbit from there years ago, the enjoyable part is they all have some personality of one kind or another. Thanks for posting Kevin.
@truthordare - Great information! Thanks. I was wondering about the motivation for these pieces. I found several similar objects while researching this one.
I have a beautiful little hand carved mouse here made with the same skill and beautiful personality as this one.
I find things like this calming to hold.
@racer4four - Sounds nice! Post, please?
Thanks for loving my kitty MALKEY, Vinyl33rpm, Karen and bobby725!
Thanks for taking the time to look and love my little Japanese cat awemazed and SEAN68!
So wonderful! Love this. Love the way the fibers of the wood creates a pattern in the cats' fur :)
And from the front I thought it was a little fox. But in the body I see a cat. I love that as well.
Thanks for your comments Elisabethan! It is a cutie, alright...
Thanks ho2cultcha!
