Made by "G. B. LEWIS CO. of WATERTOWN WISCONSIN" as clearly shown on its aluminum tag (pic 3) which a quick Google search suggests was (at least) a quite large and active manufacturer of wooden things (beekeeping items and airplane propellers in addition to crates and boxes?) in Watertown in the late 1800's at least until the mid 1900's. Best quick link I've found for further info about the company is here:

    https://www.wisconsinhistory.org/Records/Property/HI77151

I don't have the slightest idea what the exact intended purpose of this particular one of their crates is/was, nor of exactly how old it might be. I'd guess it was intended for some kind of commercial duty (vs. a simple shipping container) because of the way it is made of their 'slatted' construction (again, check the link above) but also its really heavy duty riveted steel corners, canvas strap handles, and 'skids' on the outer edges of its bottom (suggesting it was intended to be 'stackable'?) plus lack of any evidence it ever had any sorta "cover" to it. It measures 28" wide, 20" across, and 14" deep, and I've had it myself for ~20yrs or so no matter how old it already was when I got it. Makes a pretty cool 'patio cocktail table' with a sheet of acrylic on top one way or the other...? ;-) :-) :-)
