Mariquita Pérez is a Spanish doll designed by Mrs. Leonor Coello from Portugal in 1938. She was the most famous doll of the 40s and 50s, although production continued until 1976. It is considered one of the best dolls ever manufactured in Spain, and among the best in her time in Europe for the quality of her craftamanship, materials, and variety of costumes and accessories.
She was also quite popular in countries like Portugal, Argentina, Venezuela and Cuba, where she was known as “Reina de Cuba” (Queen of Cuba).
She was originally made of composition.
Her high pricetag made little girls less fortunate long for her.
She also has a brother, Juanín, available as a twin to Mariquita or as a baby.
In 1998 a doll manufacturer in Onil, Alicante, started making the "New Mariquita Perez", in a choice of composition, vinyl and porcelain.
Mine is vinyl, and has a knock-off playdress and ebay-found matching sneakers.
