I just picked up this 30" Stallman (Frank A.) & Starr(Calvin R.) trunk up yesterday. The (Columbus Ohio )partnership existed between 1889 to 1894 when Mr.Starr retired .The label and partnership tells me that it was produced between these dates. It has some abundant hardware ,a mix of cast and tin. Thankfully it is at least all present, finding hardware becomes half the battle to refinish. It has the alligator tin pattern as well . It should clean up nicely. Neat lithographs that did not age well. Missing the top tray of course. Interior needs much work.I enjoyed the long drive along the Hudson River into Ny to get it.

Great looking trunk Drill!! You did an excellent job!! Just curious did you use a gray and black two color scheme for the alligator or is it just the black with the metals natural manipulated color? Which ever it looks Fabulous ..just love it! And a maker label is even that much better, for a change, as I see so many in this format having the iron and tin detail blend, but never a label.

The label is what made me spend the $20.00 .Everyone does them a little different and that's a good thing.I wire wheeled and took the whole trunk to bare metal , Cleaned the metal down with alcohol. The Black is Matte finish spray enamel paint that I applied with an artist brush. After it dried, I evenly 80 grit sandpapered all the Alligator to pull the paint from the high spots then to 120 grit. Only black on the low spots remain. On the hardware Just 120 grit. Then I used a stainless steel cleaner followed by gun oil on all the metal surfaces. Those slats have a wood restoring oil on them to put some life back into them. I will more than likely either gel stain or clear coat the the slats, then clear coat the metal. I could do the second color gray on the high spots, but I won't because I like the look of bare metal ,it makes them still look old. I try not to remove all the age out of a piece sometimes I'll even put it back in. Whenever I want to preserve that bare metal look I use clear shellac. That's just a personal preference. That metal will still age (Patina) under that shellac it just slows it way down. The best part is I get to watch. It's still a work in progress, needs handles and an interior.

Hi Drill, I would truly & sincerely like to apologize for not responding to your great reply to my question. 2 months ago!! I disgust myself. You must think I am a real A HOLE and rightfully so...for asking a question and saying nothing to your response. I can assure you, it was by no means intentional. My cognitive abilities are pretty much shot these days and limited to 15 - 20 minutes in the present and never the past, due to my freak'n physical situation. I had simply forgot I asked anything of anyone, as I usually don't ..... as I know better..... and for this very reason. I have saved your note to my folder for the future reference along with some of Brian's past helpful notes. I was looking at your trunk again to save your before and after photos as this is what I am capable of doing these days to completion, this is when I realized what I had done, and again I deeply and truly apologize, and I hope you will Please forgive me!

Nothing to forgive Tom, No apology ever necessary with me pal. I just hope you feel better. Take things light, never sweat the small stuff and always keep a peaceful smile in your heart.
