      I'd bet that's (at least most of) a homebuilt "crystal radio".

      That was the 'beauty' (thus attraction for folks to make their own back in the early radio days) of this kinda device, it didn't require an external power source. Thus also why it couldn't drive anything but a pair of headphones -- if that -- its entire operation depends on the incoming AM radio signal (which also depends on what sort of 'antenna' wire would be attached to it) to function at all. When I was a kid I made my own using a coil wrapped around a toilet paper tube and a (then) modern "diode" instead of what looks like a much more original-ish 'crystal detector' on yours.
