This is the other Welz basket that recently arrived, another find on eBay AU.
It is made from three layers of cased glass, clear over swirling amber & pink stripes, with a white interior. It measures around 22 cm tall, 12.5 cm across the top rim, & 8 cm across the base.
The striped decor is given an added twist by way of a melon - ribbed lower half which swirls in the opposite direction. The top rim is also of extravagant design, a four cornered fine crimp intersected by four sharply pulled - out sections. The base has a partly polished pontil mark, & to cap it all off, there is a clear applied thorny handle with a single loop.
I’m often surprised at what you find here on EBay. There wasn’t heaps of cash splashing around 100 years ago yet you seem to find these imported survivors quite often. Surprising as I said.
Caramel and cream.
Simply the result of relentless searching...iso or not, I'm always on the lookout...but certainly more focused on local finds at present. This one & the cobalt blue Welz spatter basket I posted yesterday both came from South Australia...those well - heeled free settlers clearly had good taste in glass! Plus, I've got a fab Kralik vase on the way from Tasmania...can't wait!
And I totally agree, Karen, this is definitely a big chunk of (eye) candy...
It looks like a giant Belgian praline chocolate!
Totally delicious! Many thanks, Bambus1920!
