Just trying to get any info on this broken piece of what I assume to be a old plate. Unfortunately it's broken and didn't see any other pieces in the dirt with it.

It looks like Staffordshire pottery to me and I think the W is the pottery mark and Brookside is the style (just my opinion here) Check this page for possible makers:
http://thepotteries.org/mark/w/index.html
and this page gives a date range around 1895 looking at the Registered Number stamped on your piece. (Rd No 25569?)
Sorry this page:
https://pottery-english.com/staffordshire-pottery-marks/
According to my book by Chad Lage, in his chapter about registry marks, this dates between 1895-96 according to number. Which also confirms the England mark, that was required for Exports to the USA early 1990s.
Could not find the simple W mark, hops somebody else does, there were several English ceramic makers with that letter in their names.
that was 1890s not 1990s......sorry.
There is a Brookside Pottery in England, you can contact them at brooksidepottery@hotmail.co.uk maybe they will be able to help you, regards
