    Sixth plate ambrotype showing a Civil War soldier in a very unusual "battle shirt".

    Popular among soldiers and documented in period photographs. This version is more elaborate than normally encountered.

      Looks like the photo is reversed. Was that normal for that time? I know the famed Billy the Kid photo was.

      All antique hard images (daguerreotype, tintype and ambrotype) are mirrored images-- there was no negative used in the process. Sometimes you will find and ambrotype, since it is on glass, flipped in order to get a true image.

      This might have inspired shirt designs for 1950's TV cowboy heros.
