Sixth plate ambrotype showing a Civil War soldier in a very unusual "battle shirt".
Popular among soldiers and documented in period photographs. This version is more elaborate than normally encountered.
My photos-- do not reproduce in any form without my permission.
Looks like the photo is reversed. Was that normal for that time? I know the famed Billy the Kid photo was.
All antique hard images (daguerreotype, tintype and ambrotype) are mirrored images-- there was no negative used in the process. Sometimes you will find and ambrotype, since it is on glass, flipped in order to get a true image.

Sharp image. Those eyes look like they've seen things he never could forget.
Thanks much bruce-- appreciate you looking and commenting.

Was there a third side in the Civil War ? LOL !
Lots out there on "battle shirts"-- an online search will yield many examples and a few informational articles on the subject. Here are some photographic examples:

This might have inspired shirt designs for 1950's TV cowboy heros.
Thanks for looking brunswick and stuff.
