This unusual Victorian vase was another find on eBay AU.
I knew I'd seen a vase in this odd colour scheme before...& of course, I'd seen one on CW in Scott's collection - a fellow admirer of Victorian art glass with applied decoration.
The vase is made from an intense opaque yellow glass, & measures 19.5 cm tall, 7 cm x 7 cm across the square top rim, & 7 cm across the base, which has a polished pontil mark.
The cupped, square top (which I particularly enjoy, as they are rarely seen, & rather stylish) has an applied crest in pale greyish - green, with a thin stripe of white below. There is an applied leaf & flower trail in olive green glass. I really like this vase - it's classy yet a touch eccentric at the same time.
Owing to the fact that a couple of other Victorian pieces that I have in a similar yellow also glow orange under UV light, I tested this one & had the same result. A couple of those items were definitely made by Welz, (two vases in the yellow frit decor & one quilted satin glass vase with an applied clear acorn trail).
I think Bohemian in origin circa 1880s, & I shall have a bet on Harrach as a possible maker in this case. Aspects of this piece fit with other known Harrach items with applied decoration.

That’s beautiful! I love the practical aspect of the lovely design which will let you still use those flowers with very short stems and the fancy edge will provide support.
Beauty and practicality all in one!

Hi IronLace - what a lovely vase! I wanted to add that I believe this may be Welz, based on the colors and shape. They used yellow with this particular deep green color on the applications. And yes, as you mentioned, the cadmium that causes the vase to give off the orange glow is seen in the Welz pieces, too. :)

Many thanks, Michelle! Great to see you back on board!
I agree, I speculated a bit about Welz on this one, due to that distinctive yellow. I thought Harrach too due to certain aspects of the design...whoever made it, it's quite unique & I like it a whole lot...& hope I can find another piece with this unusual colour scheme...
