i'd like to know if anybody has any idea about this.
it looks like an old glass medicine bottle with its own wooden case. the wood maybe ebony but i'm not sure.
i've tried to find anything like it online but there's nothing so any information would be good.
many thanks.
The clear bottle with the stopper looks as if it were maybe used in a lab of some sorts. When I cleaned out my old soil lab years ago, there were a few of these types of bottles with glass stoppers of various sizes.
Definitely looks laboratory with the ground stopper- I wonder if it was for acid and the case would protect it from breakage. I also wonder if the case could be made of black rubber that has hardened over time- we still use rubber carriers for glass acid bottles in our lab today.
I have a similar item but instead of a black carrier, mine is brass and is threaded so the top of the carrier screws down onto the bottom half - thereby accomplishing two tasks: It protects the bottle and it keeps the glass stopper down firmly on the bottle.
thanks for the comments.
the case is definitely wood, you can see the rings when you look at the base.
this one is also threaded.
it also looks as though there used to be something nailed to the top of the case, you can just about see the outline and the small pin holes but i can't see what it is.
