1880'S Martin Maier Barrel Top Trunk is my newest find from a couple of weeks back. It measures in at 36" Long x 22" Deep x 30" Tall. Pretty good overall body condition. Has the double M hardware on the top. 1879 patent date for hinge. The patent date of the double lock is 1871. I guess the key top broke off while in it, as I pulled out the piece left inside the hole which locks the trunk. I was under the impression a double lock always had a double tang key, so learned something there. Certainly nice to have a sample to go by to make a new one. You will notice some repairs? to the trays. There are portions peeling back and underneath you can see the original MM application which matches the underside of the lid. The re-skinning of the tray tops and application of the leather straps inside, were obviously done by Likly & Rocket trunk manufactures who took the liberty of signing their work with one of their own labels. It was nice to find another MM with the M hardware again, I honestly didn't think I would. They're certainly not a common occurrence up here, as much as they are where Brian lives..lol
Wow — that’s 2 amazing trunks with complete interiors in a row!! You are on a hot streak for sure! Nice find!
True I do like MM trunks, wish I could find one with something other than alligator tin, never have seen straps on the inside of a MM, confused on the label, why they would put there label on it when it is clearly a MM trunk, have seen trunks with MM hinges only, and another trunk label in it as MM did do trunks that way for other trunk makers, but all in all a very nice trunk Tom.
Thanks! BigD338 for the love and comment, much appreciated.
Thanks Brian for the love! Sorry for being late and not being on I am having a bit of a hard time physically. The straps are from the repair add on I would think. You can see the rivets used on the front and back. Probably at the customers request. The label thing I guess was maybe a sneaky move or just signing the repair which is obviously not that good as it peeling...lol. Thanks again!
