My 81 year old grandfather had this and is wondering if anyone knows what it's used for? Or maybe even the age on it?

Hello sorry was trying to figure out how to add more pictures. From the tip of the wooden handle to the bottom of the steel fingers it's about 6 to 7 in long. About 12 inches wide. Looks to May be have had a spring where the holes are at. That's all I can give. Hoping that someone out there knows what this is. Thank you all so much

I'm not sure. I was told it might be for drilling holes for wooden pegs for old barns. I also have been told it could be for wire etc. And thank you

I looked up old barbed wire twister. I feel I'm getting closer. One picture was similar but not close if that makes any sense. Lol

My guess is that you're on the right track with the fence/barbed wire twisting tool but I certainly don't know either -- THANKS for the better pics, what an interesting thing no matter what it turns out to be?! :-)

My guess before reading the other comments was that it was a fencing tool used to take the slack out of the wire. My Dad had something similar on his sale and I was almost scolded by my elderly aunt when I questioned what in the world it was, like everyone should know that! lol

Ok so latest is that some people think it's a dowel scoring tool????? I still think it has something to do with wire tho lol

I agree on a wire tool, fencing/barbed wire. I also like the idea of a tightener!!

Woodworkers use dowels with spiral cuts in them for fastening parts together. The grooves help the dowel hold more glue for a stronger connection. This tool might work for cutting those spiral grooves. https://www.woodcraft.com/products/dowel-pins-spiral-groove-3-8-x-2-100-piece

Hello, Those dowels in the link are machine cut. Old timers would use a Dowel Plate (pretty sure that is what it is called) made of wood or metal. Holes were drilled into the plate to a corresponding dowel size. A screw or nail would would driven into the edge of the plate, and the point would very slightly protrude into the drilled hole. The dowel would then be pulled through the hole, and a groove , or with multiple passes, grooves would be scratched into the dowel. Whew!!

Maybe that is very interesting for sure. Thank you so much. I never knew this would be such a booger to get unsolved. But it's been a very fun journey so far!
