This vase is about 10" high and 12" widest diameter. It is actually pretty thin. It appears to be white clay with a brown or copper color impregnated decoration applied to the rim. The seller identified it as a Kutani mountain (toyama) vase, but the mark on the bottom is so sloppy that I cannot make it out. I suspect that the seller identified it as a Kutani mountain vase because there is a pretty similar vase here though the mark is not similar:

I submitted images to the Kuntani Ceramic Website (https://www.kutani.org/) and the experts there told me that this is not a Kutani vase, though.
I can't really blame the seller's assumption as this is the only very similar vase I could find, as well. I did find three more Kutani mountain vases which are somewhat similar, but not quite the same. Guessing it is Japanese, however, and the folks at Kutani Ceramic agreed. I will say that it does have something in common with proved Kutani mountain vases, so perhaps it is another artist or kiln's take on that type of vase?
I have read that the Chinese are counterfeiting many Japanese vases, but I don't think the Japanese version of these mountain vases are particularly valuable so not sure it would be worthwhile to counterfeit it. On the other hand, the Japanese vases are attractive so I could understand if the Chinese were just stealing the design to sell. Thoughts welcome.

I have seen similar for sale in my internet travels and I think they were noted as Kutani.
Which pottery? No idea.

Thanks for your comment, yop! I did not find any really good descriptions of Kutani "Wu Su" ware on line and had to cobble together a few lines below:
One style of Kutani Yaki pottery is a color scheme in which painting with an indigo blue line called "Wu Su (gorge)" is drawn and painting using five colors (red, yellow, green, purple, and Prussian blue called "five colors") are painted in.
A more complete description would be a good resource for folks who want to learn more about this style....

An update on this vase. After quite a bit of research, I finally used the appraisal service at https://www.kutani.org/ to see if they could tell me more about it and their assessment is that this is Japanese but not Kutani. Yikes! Still one of my favorite pieces but guessing the artist/kiln may never be identified.
