My wife and I purchased this trunk at our local antique shop today, and we’re really interested in learning more about it. The keyhole on the front has patent dates of March 1869 and 1877. From what I’ve read, I know that we’re unlikely to find the identity of the lovely woman on the interior, as photos were chosen at random for decorative purposes. But, I’m interested: Can anyone provide any information on an approximate date or potential maker? My wife and I would love to have a bit of backstory to share when our visitors ask about our charming new trunk.

Front Latches - 3 vertical holes are by C.A. Taylor patented 1878 ( Thanks goes to Drill's efforts)

I would say right around 1880 give or take a bit, without a label or identifiable hardware impossible to say who the maker was, the style was made by many trunk makers at the time and they all used the same hardware and materials, as for the lithographs they were random and for the most part showed no gender preference as to a man's or woman's trunk.

Thanks for the info! Any advice on the best way to clean up the tin a bit? We really enjoy the patina of the trunk, so we’re not looking for a full restoration. Just want to remove some rust where we can.

The Tin Pattern is Herringbone.Rust never sleeps, gently using Fine steel wool usually cleans in up a bit, for a period of time.
Here is the Taylor patent image that was previously referred to.
      Thanks for posting it.
