This is an early 1880s cabinet card of a western trapper.
Photographed in Pierre, Datoka Territory by R.L. Kelly.
Along with his outdated percussion single shot musket, the guy has a large Colt revolver and skinning knife. He must have done a lot of trading with local Native Americans as he has bead embellished sheath on his belt and bead embellished flags on his shirt bib.
I just got this in, so I haven't fully researched. He may prove to be a known local character or even a military scout as this image surfaced with several 7th Cavalry images of the same time period.

That's a converted flintlock and I believe that's a Remington with a barrel too long for the holster. Nice pic !
Remington Model 1875...
Good catch-- a close up of the grip shows it isn't Colt, Remington it is!
