I found this piece a couple of weeks ago, and it "hit me like a ton of bricks" It was in a case and the stones sparkled like crazy. Someone said it's "Etruscan Revival", but it looks Deco to me. It is not marked as to the type of metal, but it's obvious there was a ton of work put into the piece. I'm going to take it to a jeweler to see what they think. If anyone has seen anything like this before, please let me know!
I'll be curious to know what the jeweler says. It's a stunning piece! Please let us know...
I think it looks deco too. Marcasites and the green could be chrysoprase. The base could be silver. Looks like a trombone closure which was popular in the 1890s and used up into the 40s.
Thanks Wolcott and Jennie! I noticed the closure too, but I think it has to be from the later part of that period with the deco look.
Well, according to the jewelers I took it to, the metal is sterling, the White "gems" are marcasite, and no one knows what the green is. Somone said plastic, one of them said chrysoprase. Most said it's not worth a lot, but I bought it because I liked it, and I love the deco design.
No idea, AR8... Lost in the sands of time, I guess! i boughht the pin in a shop, theydidn't know anything about it.
I agree AR8, this looks like a well made piece to me as well. Nice detective work AR8.
These are my thoughts too. The craftsmanship is too good for just a cheap piece. I really like it, and everyone who sees it just says WOW! Thanks everyone for te comments.
Upstate... I had a piece like this and my jeweler told me these pieces were custom made and so the SG would be the initials of the person for which it was made. Most often these brooches were made in sterling silver, with accents of onyx and/or chrysoprase. The trombone clasp leads me to believe it was made in France. Regardless, it is beautiful and a true Deco treasure.
INdeed it is Jewelsand... Sometimes the value is more than what it's made of, but thecare that was put into making it! Thanks for looking.
This is gorgeous! I love the closure too. I am addicted to brooches and this one is absolutely stunning.
Yeah sure, its marcasite, chrysoprase, and stetling. Very common Art Deco jewelry design.
Oh!...my!...how lovely is that!...:-)
Agree with you Upstatenycollector, i LOVE that Deco look, your pieces are great!
Thanks for the love, Dee!
Wonderful art deco brooch! If you Google for art deco initial brooch you will se plenty of them with different initials so I think the SG is for the owner not maker. Ifeel chrysoprase, which I think this is, you're lucky! I love chrysoprase!
Stunning!!
