    (56 items)

This silver piece is about 1 3/4" long. Although not marked sterling, I think it is. Has initials of CDB on it. Has what looks
like a Roman numeral clock on it. It opens and snaps closed. It looks like it would hold something inside and it looks like
a man's item. It was passed down to me with items mostly from early 1900's. Does anyone have a clue?

If it is sterling there should be a hallmark and/or assay number on the inside. If the mark isn't there it is either fools silver or plated.

I think it is too small to be an antique silver dance card holder. I did check up on it and they seem to be the size of todays business card. This is only 1 3/4" long and
about 3/4" wide. So we have to keep thinking, but it was a great thought and I
learned something about old dances, I didn't know:)

Here's some things to check out, it may be from a Victorian Chatelaine:

In the 3rd photo the clip on the right side, looks like there are some marks, or numbers, or am I just seeing things? :^D

I find the 2 open hook type holders interesting, similar to the elastic holders in the old pocket cigarette cases, because of its size, I imagine it may hold wood matches, can't think of anything else that would fit the design of this rare piece. Thanks for posting.

      Maybe The Elks Lodge:

    11. kwqd kwqd, 4 years ago
Yes, I wonder if it might be time related because of the Roman numerals 1-12? My first thought was some kind of ladies scent holder. Not sure what to make of the clock face and the time 11:55, or 11:00.... Does either time have significance for the Elks?

OMG! Thank you SO much!! That is it! Everybody's help worked! I cleaned it off really well-lots of silver paste-then polished it. It came out brilliant and was marked
"Marathon Sterling" on the inside, just like where it is on the Elk Lodge one, across the thin strip of silver. Again, everyone thank you so much! No, Bill-you are not done. I have something else to identify coming up soon:)
    15. billretirecoll billretirecoll, 4 years ago
I guess you can mark it solved then! :^D

Thanks for the post SandyShores, Take Care and Stay Well! :^)

There was something missing and it was the elk’s head. The cards held in with the fittings. I wonder what the significance of the clock is to the lodge ??? A vesta case would have a striker. A very interesting post thank you.

This is great, I love it when a mystery is solved by a group of CW members, kudos to Bill, not just a pretty face as my husband likes to say....lol

As for it's usage just got a new idea, a stamp holder, the piece is too small to hold a card if its 1.75 inches long, that means its about less than half of that wide. So it does not leave many choices. Or could it contain some Elk Lodge medal or other significant small piece?

Believe it or not, we had another one right here. Never knew about the Elks and their good deeds.
    19. SandyShores, 4 years ago
Perhaps it was a holder for stamps or some type of ID to get into the club that you
had to show. Maybe someone has an answer for that one. Meanwhile, I have an
      elk to look for:)

Key holder, stamp holder, who knows??? Maybe even a photo holder?? Meanwhile, just posted another unidentifiable object found in my home. It is listed under
cameras. Maybe someone has a clue on this one.
