I guess I have to start off by thanking a CW member — thanks Drill!! Greendog found a MM a few weeks ago with the rare front latches that was in really good condition. I will admit I was pretty jealous of his sweet find!! In the ongoing discussion on CW Drill mentioned that he’d recently seen another trunk with the same front MM latches for sale. It was a tin covered trunk — not really Drill’s style or too far for him luckily for me!!
Anyway, I was able to contact the previous owner and he sent me a few better photos. It was here that I started to get really excited because I started to suspect that in addition to the front MM latches it also had a rare wheat tin pattern! And sure enough! I can’t thank Drill enough — what a fantastic trunk to add to my collection!
As a side note - it has remnants of 2 separate locks on the front. I’ll have to figure out what to do with the restoration there. It’s virtually identical in hardware to Greendog’s recent find. So excited about this beautiful Martin Maier!!
There is a visible patent date on the corner latch. Photo close-up for you to see.

Sorry all — CW gave me a strange error and I had to delete and re-post this. Sorry if I lost your likes or comments!!
    Thanks for looking!

Let's try this again, very nice trunk Damon very glad you got it, really funny that we got virtually the same trunk with the exception of the tin just days apart, I did see the 1879 patent date when I was cleaning mine but I find it really strange that having the same patent date as the rear hinge you don't see more of them, I have only seen three trunks with the front corner latches and they have all been late 1880's, but yet you see the rear hinges on early 1880's trunks, maybe Martin didn't like them or maybe they were to expensive to produce or maybe they weren't even produced until later, what ever the reason they seem to be a rare commodity, also glad to see one in something other than alligator tin which is kind of rare in it self, very nice Damon.

Awesome find! Had not seen those corner latches before. These are so beautiful once restored. Kudos to the CW team helping each other out !

Thanks for the comments Elliott! Since I first found CW I’ve admired your wheat tin MM. I honestly never thought I’d find one with that particular tin pattern. Let alone one with the front latches. These trunks are so addictive!!

Incidentally, that snake like metal pattern is also not seen very often. I
find it really cool that he didn't just use flat metal in those 2 front locations.

I keep searching for that elusive wheat pattern patent, as well as many others No luck so far.
