    Hollyhocks
    (18 items)

I have been waiting for this lovely Garnet Brooch to arrive from the UK. Its finally in Australia but not in my hot little hands yet. I have been trying to research the maker since I purchased it thinking to myself ..... mmmm I have seen those leaves somewhere !. Finally I found two sold items on the net attributed to Bernard Instone. My first thoughts, on seeing the Garnet brooch, were that is wasn't Instone because the leaves didn't look right to me. I even had thoughts of Edith Linnell because I have seen this shape leaf on a couple of pieces attributed to her. I think I feel comfortable attributing this to Bernard Instone now that i have found the above items , the moonstone brooch and the Citrine pendant, which are only shown for reference and are not mine. If anyone has other thought re maker/artist it would be great to hear from you. This is such fun ! ( Great fan or Miranda )

Great research Sue, lovely Instone brooch. I don’t think I have any Instone pieces with the same leaves has these, they are very distinctive.

Hi Jean I hoped you would check in and take a look. I did wonder if you had any Instone pieces with the same style of leaf. I really didn’t think of Instone at all to be honest but as you have said you live and learn. I am glad I have been able to attribute this piece. It’s a hard slog sometimes going through so many images and carefully looking at details but so worth it in the end when you have that moment of clarity.... yes ! That’s who it is ????

Hi Sue, that is part of the fun researching and learning. Looking forward to your next posting.

Hi Sue, I came across this brooch which has similar leave work and in my opinion construction. Bernard Instone did do work for for Sybil Dunlop, she stopped her campany in 1939, the company reopened in 1945 without Sybil. Bernard Instone designed from 1945 onwards. I do hope the link works, if not go into Pinterest and type in Sybil Dunlop, hopefully this brooch will be appear.

      Another piece with similar leaves.

Oops the link above is Edith Linnell.

Hi Jean , yes I know it gets so hard because there are similar leaves on others work ! The other thing about this piece is that the pin hinge is not the same as I have seen on other Instone brooches I have seen so I have been scratching my head a lot. I also have a piece of Linnell on the way to me, taking a very long time to arrive, but its understandable. The piece has the same leaves as the Vandenbosch example you sent a link for. My plan is that when I get them both in hand I am going to examine them in minute detail next to each other. The leaves do look similar on both pieces but I think there will be subtle differences. I run to the post box each morning in the hope my jewels will be there but have been ending up with a :( face each day so far !
I will update this when I do have the brooches in hand,

Thanks again Jean for you research .

OK I have now found some images of Instone pieces with the same pin hinge on the back....... so the plot thickens !

I know ! I get really excited but also really anxious about things getting lost in the post at the moment. It's an emotional roller coaster for me. I have collected jewellery for about 40 yrs now, nothing has wound me up as much as these pieces !
