Back in the distant past, the Garnet was used to make ornaments for decorating and juwelry. But certainly in the 19th century in Europe. During this time they called the Garnet in my home country the diamond of the poor because this stone is very beautiful but not as precious as diamonds.
Yet the beautiful garnet is a magnifique gemstone and they used them to decorate lots of wonderful old jewelry. Certainly many local jewelry were decorated with Garnets. This stone appears in different colors.
In the last two pictures you will see my collection of Garnet jewelry where the color varies from very dark brown to red and pink/red.
I love the garnets. When I was a child we vacationed once in Maine and actually found garnets in a large rock and were able to chip them out with a screwdriver! Of course yours are much better quality!
Thanks for your comment Cindyjune I'll take a look at your treasures!
Thanks Dottie, you always are intested in my juwelry talks as I do in yours.
I absolutely love the garnet brooch. I have a collection of "Bohemian Garnet" pieces and mine are hallmarked from various countries -- Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Germany. I'm looking forward to seeing your other treaures!
Thanks and nice you love this brooch as I do. It is like a star. I bought it perhaps 30 years ago in Schoonhoven, a town here where the school is for silversmith. Do you know that in old times they called garnets the robins for the poor. I don't agree, I like garnets and I see a lot of very nice old garnet jewelry passing in my country. Garnets were very much used stones in the 19th century and also often used in peasant jewelry here in my country as you can see in the examples of the earrings, pendant and brooch. as a proof of my little story.
You have a lovely collection !
Tanks for the compliment Ozmarty!
