About a week or so ago, my partner told me that he thought he'd spotted (momentarily, of course) a little chipmunk darting in/out/under a random little pile of flagstone rocks otherwise laying in the 'flower bed' beside my driveway earlier that day. He, then, started to leave a little handful of shelled nuts out on the same rock every so often, which always promptly disappeared rather shortly. Squirrels (smallish gray ones usually, unlike the larger brown ones common in IL where I grew up) are frequent inhabitants of my neighborhood/yard -- chipmunks OTOH, I didn't think we really had here...I guess I might have been slightly wrong about that...?

Pics here are when I pulled into/parked in my driveway at lunchtime today, and this little guy (?) just remained sitting up on the rock letting me grab these quick (zoomed too much, hopefully not to fuzzy thus) pics before disappearing back under the rocks again. No idea if it is actually the 'momma' with a few more babies still hiding down under there (my partner also swears he's seen at least one or two other little 'faces' occasionally nearly visible under the rocks if not being brave enough yet to come out?) so there might even be a little 'family' somewhere down under there...?

Meanwhiles I've been certain to walk Oreo puppy back and forth on the *other* side of my truck lately, though next-door-neighbors lovely little Lily kitty (an indoor/outdoor baby her own self) has also absolutely noticed something going on under those rocks too...yesterday morning when I left for work she was sitting atop the very same rock we're still leaving random handfuls of nuts on, staring intently at something I couldn't see myself until I otherwise distracted her and ran her off... ;-) :-)

What a great chipmunk, I love these little guys but they move so fast & blend in with the brush they are hard to spot. Super pix!

I love chipmunks also! It’s a real treat to catch a glimpse of one in my yard.
Several years ago, I saw my mom’s cat toying with a chipmunk who was in great peril but still very much alive....I chased that cat all over the yard making him drop the chipmunk several times but the poor little guy kept getting recaptured. He was finally able to dart into a hole in the ground under some crepe myrtle bushes. My hope was that he was in his den nursing his wounds and recovering from the near-death experience.

Now that your neighbors’ cat is honed in on the cute little guys, they are in danger. But chipmunks are smart and fast so maybe they have other dens and safe spots to take cover.
      Keep us posted on sightings!

Hey Tim, it's always nice to see wildlife in your Yard, with all the Birds in my Back Yard, we've been seeing different Birds of Prey stop by also, looking to snag an unsuspecting Bird on the ground, or at the feeders, the Mourning Doves(sometimes over 60) are quick to alert all the Birds, but that can be confusing for some and that's when a Hawk, or Kestrel will swoop-in, catching one in flight! I think that might be one of the reasons Mokey moved the Kittens to the Front Yard! Thanks for showing the cute Chipmunk in Your Yard! :^D Thanks for helping to save the World from COVID-19 by Wearing a Mask too! :^)

Cool! Was camping last week and we had a chipmunk in our camp brazingly going into my girlfriends dog bowl of food to stuff his mouth full. 'Lexi', her German Shepard figured out it was to fast for her to get after the 2nd time.

Today's quick update (according to my partner again, no pics available) is that despite Lily kitty (who he chased off once or twice today when she was otherwise out and being a bit too curious about my rock pile) there are possibly at least a momma and daddy chipmunk going in and out from down under there, along with maybe at least 3 'little ones' still mostly too shy to really come out yet. (good on them, esp with Lily hanging around sometimes!) One way or the other, the nuts/etc we both keep occasionally offering 'em all still seem to disappear promptly, we've both taken to actually putting most of those more 'down in the hole' vs. out on the rock... ;-) :-)

THANKS ALL for your comments/<love it>s meanwhiles and specifically to iggy for the (too obvious?) suggestion that maybe chipmunks will happily eat 'dog food' too instead of actual (shelled or not) 'nuts' -- I's got plenty of dog food around here lately already, but the several smallish bags of nuts the little critters have been getting fed no doubt cost more...
      <headdesk> ;-) :-)

Another quick update for the record -- there have been continued (momentary) sightings of one or three of the little critters suddenly "disappearing" when caught being seen -- also the continued little offerings of dog food or peanuts or whatever scattered around keep disappearing, if slightly slower and without observation...?

      ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-)

Today's 'update' according to my partner who was here to see it when I wasn't. Apparently sometime this afternoon an actual squirrel tried to steal/snatch some of my chippiemunks' daily (at least) scattering of dog chow around their little pile of rocks -- and at least *3* of 'em thusly emerged from their burrows to literally chase the squirrel away, apparently rather successfully.

GO, CHIPMUNKS -- I'm so happy that y'all chose my yard to make y'all's home in. LIVE LONG & PROSPER, all y'alls!! :-) :-) :-) :-)
