We have had this table on out porch for 20 years after dragging it home as a freebie at the curb. It was quickly banned to the porch since it was dirty, the drawers were locked close and cracks were evident in the frame. Race ahead to this spring and an antiques dealer saw this sitting aside during a garage sale. He volunteered some info. It was made in the 1880's (+/-) according to the overall design and was used in the kitchen of a commercial facility such as a restaurant. The bright work were all solid brass castings circa 1870. This changed our expectations for the table and because we want to keep it, I gave it a complete overhaul so that it would become attractively functional once again. So much for banishment, its been moved indoors!
A beautiful piece of antique furniture. I have also seen this referred to as a library table.
