Hi everyone, I picked up this ring at an estate sale... Not real familiar with opals, was wondering if someone could tell me what kind this is? The ring appears to be quite old and is stamped 14K... Any information would be appreciated, thanks in advance, Dan.

Awesome! I believe that is an Australian black opal. Impressive and fabulous. I'm sure a rel expert will identify it.

Thanks for the responses... plein-air-painter, I was thinking maybe black opal as well... But, it's just crazy how many different types of opals there are! I had no idea.

That white base suggests to me that it is a doublet rather than a solid stone. But the fire in the opal is wonderful.

vetraio50, thanks for your response... I believe you're right about it being a doublet, smooth top and white back suggest that... It really does have the fire! I took these few pictures without a flash, it catches the light differently from every angle.

ho2cultcha, thanks for your response... I googled Lightning Ridge opals, you may be right!

Just a follow up... Had the ring 'appraised', appraiser said very likely Lightning Ridge black/semi-black opal doublet. Said it was probably made sometime between 1950's to 70's... I'd like to thank everyone for their comments, and the 'loves'!
