It looks like someone removed the reeding, exposing the cross section.

Both photo's above point to the same thing. Someone wanted to make a silver ring and found out you can't do it with a new quarter. You always get the copper in a new quarter, the old ones you got a totally smooth silver ring. For a female you would use a dime and make a pinky ring. The edge above and the exaggerated rim in picture two both point to someone having tried to spooned this coin. It was a fad years ago and some folks even today give it a try, it isn't difficult. Next person to get the coin swears it has to be a mint error. This is the second one posted here in a week.

Thank you for the logical explanation about my post mint alteration quarter. I will try to check posts more carefully in the future. Thanks again :)

I was wondering if some of you were looking at the same pics I am or if I am looking at the wrong ones. Because the pics I'm seeing doesn't match up with comments im reading. I know about the ring making, I've done it myself. And the pics I'm looking at here looks nothing like that, during any stage of the ring making process. Please let me know if I am looking at wrong pics I'm new on here. Thank you

I have a 2005 quarter just the same. It's sandwich like. Looks like two separate pieces almost. Curious if it's suggested I keep it.
