Our best guess is that my father-in-law brought this back from Korea in the 1950s. He was there in the army. Can anyone tell us what it is?

They are Japanese, probably Satsuma, and likely 1930s-40s.
They show the god Kannon with the immortals. The raised design is called moriage and was a feature of some Satsuma works.
I haven't checked for the actual kiln with that backstamp but if you check this site you may find it :

Other sites may also help identify the mark.
Thank you so much for the information. I will check it out.
distorted Nichi Hon
how do you mean 30-40 ?
I think that's the period it was made.
1950 NICHI HON (NIPPON) DRAGON WARE MORIAPAGE LITHOPHANE TEA SET
1514. Dragon ware tea pot. Mark: Nichi Hon (Nippon). Tentative date, c. 1950. gotheborg
OK, thanks for the correction.
Thank you both. I have learned much and will learn more now that I know what it is.
