Picked up this Early 1873-75 leather Transitional period Barrel Stave Trunk. I say Transitional period based upon the fact that latches or hasps were patented in 1872 and the hinges on this trunk, with built in 90 degree stay points, are patented in 1873 by A.M. Darrell. With all new things up and coming, I would think a couple of years for the hasps to take over and phase out the straps, so that would be, say... 1875ish. Measures in at 32" Long x 20" Deep x 25" Tall. The interior is not complete. No makers label. It has as you can see, some different metal work with brass capped slats. The lock has a 5 barrel hinge and no marks that I can see. Top slats have the brass cover nails so that is nice. This trunk also has three different width of slats, regular on the top a little smaller on the face and much narrower on the ends. Judging by the remnants of leather above the lock and nails below, it would have had a leather lock cover flap piece. Never encountered the double arrow head handles before.. All in all an interesting trunk with some age.

Tom this is really a wonderful trunk . Love the brass on the slat clamps, the double nailing and the patterns on the leather. The metal work reminds me of a few of the older prolific trunk makers such as A.R. Pritchard ,Nathan Neat and Watkins & Wolff. I Missed out on a trunk with a similar flavor by "Sage's Trunk Depot" a while back.It needed a lot of work (to much rot) so I let it go.Thank for the post!

Thanks Drill, I have two others posted with similar characteristics. Both have the brass covered slat tips and extra corner metal work. It must have been a period style during the 1870's as I doubt these are all from the same maker. I see an easily discernible pattern here for trunk of the 1870's. bjb5859 Just listed one as well not to far back, with similar details from the same period. Your more familiar with the makers of the time than I am..that's for sure. Thanks again!!
