1950 Omega Automatic Bumper Watch
Great story. My father was into ham radio and electronics all my life. He passed about 13 years ago, and for the last 10 years I've been gathering items and dragging them to the annual electronic swap meet.
My father was an icon in the ham radio community. Hams would send him radios from all over the world for repair, which he did as a hobby. Even helped widows sell the remains of their Estates. he would get as much money as he could for the families and whatever was left over got added to his enormous inventory.
I was looking through a plastic parts bin. You know the kind with a bunch of little drawers. I found this Omega watch inside the back of one of the drawers.
When I picked it up and shook it, the watch started ticking. The crystal was yellow and appeared to be made of plastic. looking at the back of the watch it looked very plain. I was thinking it was a fake or knock off watch.
I took it to a watch place and had them open it up. To my surprise it was beautiful inside with machine turning and a 17 Jewel Jewel movement. My niece's husband is a watch repair specialist for a large jewelry store. he was able to put a new crystal in, fix the sweep hand that was sticking, and fix the adjustment knob that kept falling off. I'm on the lookout for a vintage watch band to match the style of this watch. But the watch is like new and keeps perfect time.
Excellent find and a great story.
Thanks..I was amazed that almost 70 years old at the time, the autowinder still worked. It just needed some minor repair.
I had a similar thing happen the other day on an even older watch from the 1930’s ..... picked it up, wound it and it just started working perfectly again. Different times. Quality product.
My daily watch is a Belair seapearl 600. It's gold with a black face and a date window. It has all Swiss movements in it and keeps time very accurately.
I inherited this watch when my father passed away he wore it daily. It stopped working a year ago and my relative was able to restore it. And I continue to wear it everyday.
