    This tool is approximately 3 1/4 inches long and expands to 5 inches long. At the end of the long tine is a very small hook. I do not know what kind of metal it is made of. There are 2 brass bands - one at the end and the base and one that you use to push the tine out of the holder. I think it dates from 1880's - 1930's. What was this used for?

      Google Antique stitch ripper. I found it quickly. Patent I noted was from 1871.

      Thank you, dav2no1. I think you are correct that it is a crochet hook. It looks just like # 37. My great aunt did a lot of crocheting and she learned from her mother. It probably belonged to my great grandmother. I greatly appreciate all the help.
