This vase is about 6" high x 5" in diameter and is signed on the bottom. It is my first piece of Seto ware which is, arguably, the most commonly produced pottery in Japan. Seto ware is very commonly used as tableware, every day pottery, so commonly so that the Japanese often refer to every day pottery, in general, as seto-mono (from Seto).

This particular vase was purchased about 20 years ago in Seto at the yearly Setonomo Festival, which was cancelled this year due to Covid. This vase violates my "must be decorated on all sides" preference because I liked the execution of the persimmon decoration, it was very inexpensive, small and I had no Seto ware pottery. I also like the minor disruption in the design caused by the coloring the top of the vase. Not sure which of the dozens of kilns in Seto, Aichi Prefecture which produce Seto ware made my vase.

"The Seto region produces so much pottery that the Japanese often refer to everyday dishes as Seto-mono or things from Seto."

"The Setomono Festival, held since 1932, sees the local pottery industry celebrating the legacy of Kato Tamikichi, hailed as “Father of Seto Pottery,”and who studied this art in Kyushu during the Edo period and brought it to the Seto region. Numerous events take place over the festival’s two days, and among them is Japan’s biggest "Seto Pottery Bargain Market," where prices are way lower than usual, drawing in several hundred thousand people from all over the country."
