    Japanese Wooden Ginger Jar

    Approximately 5 7/8" tall
Has a wooden top with a butterfly and an inner lid
"IN JAPAN" lightly carved on the bottom - I assume they forgot the "MADE" part?

This is another piece from a lot that I picked up over the weekend.

      That's fantastic.

Could the IN Japan stand for Interwar Japan? Exports of Japanese products greatly increased in the 1930s....could your ginger jar be that old?
I was not able, in my brief Google check, to see if IN Japan was used to designate those export items of that period of history.

Interesting theory. I can't say that I've seen anything marked like that. I have seen Occupied Japan we had a whole dinner set that was marked that way.

My opinion is it that it's more contemporary. Looks machine made almost. And obviously it's a decorative piece the opening is only 2 in wide by 4 in deep.

      Pictures added though...

Additionally I've inspected it very closely under magnifying glass including wetting it, to look for invisible marks or lines. There is nothing else..

Very interesting! I hope someone can shed some light on this mystery.

I think you are right. They forget to put "made" on it. Look at the mark on the pot in this link.

I wonder if this is a Japanese Tobacco or Tea canister instead of a Ginger Jar.

The term “ginger jar” refers to the shape/style of a jar. I think the plant foliage and flower looks like a ginger plant...so a ginger jar displaying a ginger plant. Cleverly designed :^)
