This Japanese porcelain incense burner is about 3.5", including handles, x 3" high, including finial, marked "Made in Japan" with maker's mark. A very common style and theme of incense burner in Japan in the past. This one is well used but not too abused. I have been looking for an inexpensive example and this one came along. Aside from a bit of chipping to the bottom of the lid and a bit of paint loss, it is in pretty good shape. The coloring and decoration was all hand painted. I don't use the type of incense which fits into a burner like this, but may get some and christen it. Marking it Mystery Unsolved until I figure out the maker.

Be interested in reading what you find out. I have a plate and a vase with these gods, the vase has this same moriage decor.

Was looking for something else and I came across this vase.

Mine is very similar, base is marked Made In Occupied Japan. I will post it for you if you like.

The mini vase in that eBay listing has the familiar Gotheborg mark, yours has a Made in Japan mark, mine is marked Made in Occupied Japan. These were made for the export tourist trade/dime store market by the thousands in the 40s-50s I would imagine.

Thanks for the link! That vase has a different maker's mark than my piece does. I imagine there were many kilns cranking these out, before and after the war. I found a better image of the kiln mark on my piece on another auction and will update the post with that better image.

The "Made in Japan" mark was required between 1921 and 1941 and after 1952 it was used as well.

Some sellers identify the woman on the vase as Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy or compassion and them man as the god of immortality, who has several names, but I am still investigating this.

Thanks for taking a look at my latest Japanese pottery find Kevin, Manikin, aura, katherinescollections, Jenni, MarmorealMaiden and valentino97!
