Jenny Lind style trunk of the late 1850's to 1860's
I have had opportunities to by a Jenny Lind trunk, but there are many styles and the ones that came up didn't look very nice to me, until this one, jumped out at me, close to home and only asking 20.00 thus easily making it my first one, in the true bread loaf shape with two top wood slats. No maker label as usual. Has the complete original leather lid lift. Measures in at 30L x 16D x 15T. The extra missing right side buckle was still inside so that was good to find still present, but no tray. In the ad photo on my #4 photo, the key hole looked like someone had cut it open to probably pick the lock. Even seeing it in person with quick inspection came to the same conclusion. I thought it was a real shame someone would cut a beautiful lock on a 150-60 year old trunk which is pretty much the key feature on this piece. ( no pun intended ). However only by feeling it later at home with my finger nail did I realize the material was still there but folded over, so a simple starter fold back and it revealed the key hole shape again which was great. It needs to be taken off and flattened properly from the back side so I stopped where it is for now. Save the leather ,remove the leather, always a question, so its not to bad the decision has already been made for me by the condition..which is fine by me....less to stress about!
Those are interesting trunks. Something I do not run into.

I have a bread loaf style in close to excellent condition. The main thing is both handles are missing. We really should replace those. But removing the old stubs while not damaging the leather will be tricky. It’s a bit intimidating -
Well Samkat. I believe you are only looking at the two nails. From what I see the construction is... first covered in leather ...with the slits either cut prior to or after covered, then the handle ends are inserted, then nailed. simply because it captures the whole width and center of the nail head not allowing it to roll around as it would with stay a screw driver type narrow head. I insert a piece of counter top laminate under the bar when lifting/prying as it is very strong & thin smooth side down and won't allow the pivot pressure of the bar to mare your leather. You kind of need something thin to start the whole thing as well. They are not that tough to pop once you have cracked the seal so to speak. Thanks for the love as well. You should show it.

Thanks Mike, Yes same here! Now that I actually own one myself, I find they do have an allure about them. I have never seen another offered up here before, so I was surprised to see it. There all kinds of different shapes for Jenny Lind but this to me is by far the nicest style, with the wood slats. I only have two mind you and metal bands .. there is another on here which has 5 and brass banding to boot which is very nice. You made me feel guilty that my nice Jenny Lind has been in a heap and unappreciated for over 10 years. I worked for about 4 hours carefully working off the old stub handles. Each end had two additional 1 1/4” clinch nails next to the button nails - Not an easy task removing them without damaging leather. Now deciding what to replace them with. I will post it -
