Saw this trunk at a flea market, had to add it to my collection. Didn't need another trunk but like all trunk junkies you can never have enough, can always make room for one more. Beautiful hardware, patent date October 23, 77 with an amazing lock. Great trunk with original interior; which is in nice condition for the age. Excited to get started on cleaning it up so I can display it in my family room.
Looking for advice on the best way to clean the hardware. Hoping folks will share their metal cleaning tricks and tips. Have refinished a lot of trunks in my collection, this one has the best hardware so want to make sure I clean it up without causing damage.
well KathyKay, I personally use Performax nylon abrasive wheels and my drill to clean all my metal, your trunk looks to be in good shape not all rusty, I assume you are removing the leather ? I leave it on until I have cleaned the metal it helps protect the wood.
also great trunk.
greendog - thank you for the advice. I love your beautiful trunks.
I'm retiring soon and hope to get started on the 5 or 6 trunks that I have stored that need to be refinished. This one is at the top of the list to work on.
Thank you KathyKay, good luck with your retirement and hope to see them when you are done.
Amazing Trunk! Follow Greendog’s advice and you won’t be disappointed. Good luck in retirement and good luck restoring these trunks
Thanks for the " love it" feedback
As recommended, I went out and purchased some nylon abrasive wheels. Started working on the trunk today. I'm very happy with how well the nylon cleans and how great the hardware is looking.
Greendog - Thank you for the great advice.
Your welcome Kathy, let the wheel do the work, can't wait to see it when your done.
