I can't figure out much about A.E. Chanal, or Alice and Eugene Chanal, a husband and wife team working in Paris sometime in the late teens and/or early 1920s. I've seen bits and pieces about their work, but not really anything definitive. Anybody have info? I've tried to sell it, but no one seems interested. I think it's a great piece, but I have no idea what the market might be for it.
This was a great pic, for just $1 at a garage sale. The guy was so worried about the little McCoy pottery planter I was trying to talk him down on, that he finally decided he didn't want to sell it (the McCoy piece) and he put it up. I offered him a buck for this piece and without blinking he said "sure."
Also, any advice on cleaning or not cleaning? I haven't touched it yet.
Item is 11 ½" tall, 6" at widest with a 4 ½" base.
I have what I think is a hammered pewter coffee pot with the same marking--I love it and wanted to know something about the maker. I think my mother inherited from a mysterious French woman named Therese, who returned with a cousin to Richmond following a long stay in Paris. (I think there was some quiet little scandal, but my mother had no real information...)
Hmmmm, intriguing. I still don't know much about a.e. chanal. I'm still wondering what sort of price it might fetch and whether to polish it.......
